” The unborn Buddha Mind is not something other than you; it is not something separate from you. But even though it is not separate from you, you must bring it forth. You must realize it and manifest it, not just once, but moment to moment.” Adyashanti

Gardens are sanctuaries where we can slow down, rest, think, pray and connect to Nature. It is wonderful to enhance our garden with the spirit of the Buddha or Kuan Yin. Having statues of these special beings in the garden helps bring a higher energy into the space with which we can connect and embody. They speak to our spiritual self. Our garden becomes a place of peace and meditation.
The Buddha was an extraordinary being. I am most impressed with the fact that he sought no teacher, and his enlightenment was achieved by his own efforts and wisdom. In this way, he helped inspire all human beings to believe in and trust their worth. This is very different from most of the worlds religions where a supreme being is placed above man, for immediately his subservient position reduces his worth. The Buddha was known for this advice: ” Be islands unto yourselves, refuges unto yourselves, seeking no external refuge.” He clearly believed in man’s ability to find the truth within himself.
The Buddha taught selfless service, promoted equality, protected animals and supported the role of women. He embraced all people with compassion and tolerance. His self-created awakening brought forth empowering messages for us all.
- What each of us does, thinks and says does really matter for the choices we make in each moment have consequences.
- We are responsible for our experiences.
- We can make a fresh start in life with a new choice.
- We are free to create our lives, but we are not free to challenge or change spiritual law and truth that defines good and bad.
- The interdependence of all things cannot be, for any truly sensitive mind, a source of security or comfort.
- Happiness comes from developing qualities within ourselves that we can be proud of, such as kindness, sensitivity, equanimity, mindfulness, conviction, determination, and discernment.
- We must be willing to evaluate our lives and our ideas of what is a worthwhile investment of our time and efforts.
The Buddha sought to question our normal way of life, conditioned by time, space, and the limitations of aging, illness, and death against the possibility of a timeless, spaceless, limitless happiness. For man across the globe is conditioned by his limitations, and the Buddha’s awakening transcends all cultures. The Buddha is an inspiration for us all to only look within ourselves for the answers to end our suffering.
I love Kuan Yin, and the image above is a painting I did of her. Just click on the image if you would like to visit my art site.
Kuan Yin is the beloved Goddess of compassion. In the Far East, images of her can be found in homes, temples, and within thousands of shrines and grottoes beside roads and shaded pools. In the seventh century, Kuan Yin was referred to as “Mother of ten million Buddhas” — the idea being that from the feminine qualities of purity, compassion, and highest wisdom, Buddhas are born. By the eleventh century, the goddess figure had reached such a level of popularity that it all but obliterated the male representation.
Tradition speaks of Kuan Yin as having been an ordinary woman who adhered to the path of service and wisdom. After many incarnations, she achieved the ultimate goal of Nirvana. But hesitating at the threshold, she heard, rising from the world, a great wail of woe, as if all the rocks and trees, insects, animals, humans, gods and demons, cried out in protest that so virtuous a one should depart from their midst. This noble-hearted soul turned back, determined to remain until every being without exception should precede her into Nirvana. And so it is that when we awaken to our true self, and live with compassion for all life, we are Kuan Yin — the incarnation of mercy and love.
Kuan Yin, in keeping with her vow: ‘A guard would I be to them who have no protection, a guide to the voyager, a ship, a well, a spring, a bridge for the seeker of the Other Shore.”
